The peach is 8'tall and 8' wide. The peach is refurbished and painted every year.
It takes the peach 58 seconds to descend from the top of the light tower to its resting place at the bottom.
The reason for the Peach Drop was to create a new tradition for the city of Atlanta. It is now a signature event in the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia. The event has since grown to a 1 hour regionally syndicated television show. We expect to clear 50+ television markets this year in the United States.
The Peach Drop was originally created by Urban Festival Inc., the management company of Underground Atlanta and Entertainment Design Group.
The first headline act to perform was the Robert Ray Orchestra in 1989. Peach Drop has also featured Little Richard, Sister Hazel, Edwin McCain, Collective Soul and Lonestar, just to name a few!
WXIA-TV has been involved in the television coverage since its inception. WATL-TV, sister station of WXIA-TV, Tupelo-Honey Productions, The Television Syndication Company, Inc. and Entertainment Design Group work in conjunction with each other to produce the event. This year the Peach Drop will air live on myAtlTV (WATL-TV) beginning at 11:30pm.
The Peach Drop is presented by AirTran Airways. Additional support is provided by the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, City of Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, KICKS & EAGLE Radio, A Legendary Event, New York Times, Cooper Atlanta Transportation Services, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, The Sunday Paper and Party City of Atlanta.
